Free & open-source communication
Talk with a tap.
Free, forever.
Sayable is a picture communication board that speaks out loud. Tap tiles to say words and build sentences — for anyone who finds talking hard. No accounts, no subscription, no catch.

Real, right here
Go ahead — make it talk
This is the actual app, running in your browser. Tap a tile and your device speaks. Tap a folder to open more words. Nothing to install, nothing sent anywhere.
Like it? The full app adds a board editor, thousands of real symbols, multiple profiles, and voice & speed control. It's the same price: nothing.
Keep it forever
Put it on your device
Sayable runs right in the browser — but the best move is saving it to a home screen. After that it opens like any other app, full-screen, with no internet needed, and everything stays on your device.
-
Open the app
On the device you'll actually use — a tablet is perfect — open Sayable in the browser.
-
Save it to your home screen
- iPhone & iPad — in Safari, tap the Share button, then Add to Home Screen.
- Android — in Chrome, tap the ⋮ menu, then Add to Home screen (or Install app).
- Computer — click the install icon at the right end of the address bar.
-
That's it — it's yours
From now on it opens from its own icon and works completely offline. Boards live on the device. No account to lose, nothing to renew.
Once saved, Sayable keeps working even without this website — the whole app lives on your device, not on a server. Set up boards in Edit mode, and use Settings → Export any time to keep a backup file of a profile.
Why we built this
A voice shouldn't cost a fortune
For too many people, the tool that gives them a voice sits behind a paywall. Dedicated AAC devices can run into the thousands. Premium apps charge hundreds. Sayable exists to say: that barrier doesn't have to be there.
$2,000–15,000
Dedicated speech devices
Specialized hardware, often paid out of pocket or after a long insurance fight.
$200–300
Premium AAC apps
One-time or subscription, frequently account-gated and locked to one platform.
Sayable
$0
Free. Forever.
Open-source, no accounts, no ads, no upsell. Runs in any modern browser.
Figures are typical market ranges for comparison, not quotes. Always talk with a speech-language pathologist about what fits a person best — Sayable is designed to make trying AAC free and easy, not to replace professional guidance.
Everything you'd expect
Small to start. Serious when you need it.
Sayable does the whole job — speaking, building sentences, editing boards, real symbol libraries, multiple communicators — and does it fast, offline, and for free.
-
Speaks out loud
Uses your device's built-in voice — instant, natural, and completely offline. No cloud, no lag, no cost.
-
Builds sentences
Tap words into a sentence bar, then speak the whole thing. Fix a word or clear it in one tap.
-
Folders & boards
Group words into categories. Tap a folder tile to dive in, and back out again — as deep as you like.
-
Full board editor
Add, move, recolor, and link tiles right on the device. Drag to reorder. Everything auto-saves.
-
Real symbols
Search thousands of ARASAAC pictograms, use emoji, or add your own photos. All stored offline.
-
Multiple profiles
A separate board set for each communicator, with a quick switcher. One device, many voices.
-
Voice & speed
Pick a system voice and speaking rate per profile, with a Test button to hear it before you commit.
-
Shape coding
An optional distinct shape per word type — a non-color cue that helps colorblind and low-vision users.
-
Install & go offline
Add it to a tablet's home screen and it runs with no network at all — on the bus, on a plane, anywhere.
-
Export & import
Save a whole profile as one self-contained file to back up or share. Bring it to another device in seconds.
-
Private by design
Boards live on the device. No accounts, no servers, no tracking. This website makes zero third-party calls, either.
-
Free & open
Licensed GPL-3.0 and developed in the open. Read it, fork it, improve it. It will never be paywalled.
How it works
Three taps to a sentence
-
Tap a picture
Every tile is a word with a friendly picture. Tap and it speaks straight away.
-
It talks
Your device says the word aloud using its built-in voice — no internet required.
-
Build & speak
Words stack into a sentence bar. Tap Speak to say the whole thing in one go.

Our promise
Free forever isn't a launch price. It's the point.
Sayable has no premium tier, no “pro” unlock, and no ads waiting in the wings. The code is open under the GPL-3.0 license, so it can't be quietly taken private and sold back to you. If a person needs a voice, cost should never be the thing standing in the way.
Good questions
Frequently asked
What is AAC?
AAC stands for Augmentative and Alternative Communication — tools that help people who don't speak, or don't speak reliably, to communicate. A picture board that talks, like Sayable, is one common kind.
Is it really free? Where's the catch?
Really free. There's no account to create, nothing to buy, no ads, and no “upgrade” screen. Sayable is open-source software licensed under GPL-3.0, built to stay free.
Do I need internet?
Only for the first load. Save Sayable to your home screen and it runs completely offline afterward — the speech comes from your device, and your boards are stored on it. Perfect for cars, planes, and spotty Wi-Fi.
How do I put it on a tablet?
Open the app in the tablet's browser, then add it to the home screen — the setup steps walk through it for iPad, Android, and computers. It takes about a minute, and afterward Sayable opens from its own icon like any other app.
Which devices work?
Any device with a modern browser — iPad, Android tablet, Chromebook, phone, laptop. Tablets are the most popular because the tiles are big and tappable, but there's no special hardware to buy.
Can I use my own pictures?
Yes. Tiles can use emoji, searchable ARASAAC pictograms, or your own uploaded photos. Everything is stored right on the device so it keeps working offline.
Is my data private?
Completely. There's no server and no account, so boards never leave the device unless you choose to export a file. This website has no analytics or third-party trackers, either.
How do the voices work?
Sayable uses the voices already built into your device through the browser's Web Speech API. You can pick a voice and speaking speed per profile. Available voices vary by device and operating system.
Is this medical advice or a device recommendation?
No. Sayable is a free tool to make trying AAC easy. For choosing the right long-term system, please work with a speech-language pathologist — Sayable is a great, no-cost way to explore alongside them.
How can I help?
Use it, share it with a family or clinic who could use it, and — if you write code — the project is open on GitHub. Bug reports and ideas are welcome.
